About Flaps
FLaps is CEO of 13thFLOOR… And the producer of our shows. I’ve been that since 96.
Flaps is the man married to THE wife… Amanda. She is THE wife. And deserves a host of medals for being married to me.
And now since 09/01/07 Flaps is the proud father of Riccardo…
…van der Merwe!
And Jacques-Louis, who sadly passed away after having open heart surgery when he was 3 days old. He lived to be 2 weeks old.
And then recently adopted Nastia, who is our a little Princess!
After 5 years of LLB (Law School) I ventured into the unknown with some other crazy people and founded C-Kruis. Still been at it since! No Bible School. Sorry.
Flaps has certain opinions about God… I think the key word that describes my philosophy about God and life is INTEGRATION. I would like to see people living an integrated life with God and with society. I believe that’s what Jesus did. He showed us the way. He showed us how. He showed us how to live in harmony with God and with people! (Note: ‘people’ - not Christians. - In fact he lived in surprising disharmony with those who might have been classified as Christians)
I live to see people live the calling God has embedded in their souls! And live that in an integrated world. (Note: not a seperated Christian community on a mission to make the rest of the ‘bad bad’ world part of their elite club filled with Christian jargon, man made Christian customs etc)
Flaps engages in art… Some would be offended if I call myself an artist. I have appreciation for the arts. And that happens to be the medium I use along with my colleagues to express truth in picturesque ways. See our shows if you can. Honestly I don’t believe performing the ‘lost son’, lost coin’ or ‘lost sheep’ is an effective way of communication today. Nor a so called modern attempt of ‘the lost drug addict’. I believe ‘the arts’ holds the potential, if used correctly, to carry God’s love for His people, His touch in their lives, His truth that liberates. Have I said, ’see our shows if you can’?
Flaps writes things… I write. I have a lot to say. I write screenplays. And probably at some point I’ll write some sort of book. And at some point a screenplay for a movie.
Flaps plays golf… Yes I do, and as any true golfer’s handicap reflects, (me being a 20), the joy is in playing more shots, not less. Deep down I hope to one day play less shots…more often. For now I enjoy the journey, often with THE wife kicking my butt - on the course that is.
Flaps likes some people… I like Madonna, Nicole Kidman, Retief Goosen, Nelson Mandela, Rob Bell, Mark Boucher (he should be captain), Hugh Grant, Christelle.
Flaps doesn’t like some people… But let’s leave it at that.
Flaps speaks… At home to THE wife - At 13th Floor when I teach - at parties when people get married and need a guy to talk to them about it and make announcements about kissing a bride - at events where people like to hear my opinion about God and life - and on Sundays 10h30 at TheVILLAGEVENUE (Close to the Performer theater)
