Picture 1 is when a few us watched cricket at the IPL with 20 thousand other people. (Note I don’t say cricket lovers - however I would say most are.) Picture 2 is when the fam and I visited Grace Bible church in Soweto with 7 thousand other people. (Note I don’t say Christ lovers - however I would say most are.) Picture 3 is me at an empty Loftus a day before Super 14 final. There was actually something distinctly spiritual in sitting there, ‘drinking in’ the space inside this cultural phenomenan - (some cynics would say idol temple).
I think a lot of how we serve God is inseperable with culture. It is still embedded in culture. I’m not always particularly proud of my culture when I see Bulls fans with horns on their head and other stuff on their tow-bars, when I look at what’s best selling music in our country, and when I experience what I find to be strange cultural expressions of faith. Some God-lovers judge all these different cultural phenomena. Because they don’t understand it.
I don’t think God does. He just loves us anyway.

WHETHER WE LIKE TO CALL HIM JESUS OR FATHER OR HOLY SPIRIT… AND AS WE ATTEMPT TO UNDERSTAND MORE OF HIM IN THE FULLNESS OF WHO HE IS

Go for it, people can be so judgemental, because they dont understand, If we truly are followers of Christ, why do we look apon others as if we are better, its just because we dont put ourselves in their shoes, because we THINK we are better than them…or we are beneath them….in Gods eyes we are all the same…rugby=facebook=mixit=church=internet….we all have some sort of thing that we do…how can we judge others??
Hi Flaps I’ve been struggeling with this seperating how and where I worship God from my culture. Between Shalom Ministries and a German/ English/ Afrikaans Lutheren Church, both of which Siobahn and I attend some times, I still long for my culture in church. I want to share communion with bread & wine like we do in my culture. It is not so much about juging but more where we feel comfortable. Every where I go I do Find God, But where I feel the closest to Him is at home. There it becomes intimate. This struggle to find a place of worship makes me understand better why more and more people become de-churched. Parents from the same culture can’t deside in which church to christen their children, so who is the Other?
